Chamber opera of a poisonous lie story
for soprano, baritone, fixed media, video and ensemble.
"Life cannot bloom brilliant flowers from lies"
by Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (German Poet)
The Opera
The chamber opera "Telosma Cordata's Dream" is a compelling response to the pressing human trafficking issue currently afflicting Taiwan. The narrative unfolds as individuals fall prey to deceptive job offers, leading them to be trafficked to Southeast Asian countries. Once there, they find themselves either coerced into participating in fraudulent activities within scam groups or facing the ominous prospect of organ trafficking.
The libretto, authored personally, endeavors to illuminate the gravity of these circumstances. The deliberate choice of the widely recognized flower, "Telosma Cordata," serves as a symbolic representation, adding depth and resonance to the opera's thematic exploration.
Synopsis
Telosma Cordata, a young woman dealing with money problems in a small town, dreams of having a better life. She's struggling with her limited situation and finds a bit of hope in her dreams. One night, she has a vivid dream.
In this dream, she's in a magical world where everyone has special powers. However, she's different because she doesn't have any magic. There, she meets Noctis, a powerful wizard, who offers to make her dreams come true through magic.
Excited about the chance, Telosma agrees to a deal with Noctis. She becomes a special flower that only blooms at night, and Noctis uses her nice smell to attract people and make money. The only rule is she can't be in sunlight, or she'll die.
As Telosma goes along with this dream arrangement, she discovers something troubling. The smell that attracts people to her has a side effect - those who smell it turn into flowers, unknowingly helping Noctis become more powerful. She realizes Noctis wasn't honest, and she's unintentionally making people his slaves.
In a brave move, Telosma decides to face the sunlight, sacrificing herself to break the cycle. The dream ends with her evaporating in the sun.
When Telosma Cordata wakes up, she thinks deeply about her dream. This reflection leads to a change in her perspective on life.
